for defense. mr. john kerry, secretary of state. the and mr. john brennan of virginia, for -- [inaudible] there you go. thank you very much, everybody. shepard: nancy pelosi, eric cantor. a.b. stoddard here with me from "the hill." columnist, editor. the signing happened in the president's room. >> with the very people he has been dealing with. majority leader cantor and house speaker john boehner on the fiscal cliff and onto the very important debate over whether and how and when to raise the debt ceiling, these are, it is a time of high tension. these are not people who get together often when. they do it is not easy, but everyone is playing a role today of high ceremony and giving it respect that it deserves. president obama is clearly, in a relaxed mood, enjoying, enjoying this, this occasion. you could see when he left to go back inside the capitol, i thought it was interesting to look a last look at the sea bodies down the mall and sort of drinking it in. it was interesting. he knows he has a few hours before it becomes the grueling combat again of governing and moving on to his am
of fights. he's willing to fight on chuck hagel and here you have a guy, john brennan for the cia who said that jihad is a legitimate tenant of isl-- tenet of islam and he said that he's not going to allow the debt ceiling debate to be died to spending cuts which we desperately needs. he obviously -- he wants a fight. what do you make of the strategy that he's employed. >> i think what's happened to him is he feels that by winning a second term, with a slight addition of democrats in the house and the senate he now is, you know, king of the the world to quote an oscar winner of bygone days. and you noticed in these lists, look at the list of the major appointees, starting with brennan and hagel and these are nobody of independent stature. it's not like the first term where he had a clinton, where he had a gates, where he had people who could be a team of rivals. this is a team of essential, you know, fact totems. he wants to rule and he wants to govern and he will not let anybody stand in his way and i think that's what he's saying and he will take on any fight in order to get his people.
, governor, we are not -- the person that in theory should be the most controversial, john brennan, the drone program, he took himself out of contention in 2008. nothing has been said about him. >> because he is low key and on the radar screen from the public, and it not one of the big three. >> might check in with rachel maddow. >> i was going to say, i also think it's because there's been an acquessence. >> the republicans like drones. >> bernie sanders is planting a flag in jack lew's -- >> he represents the entire left of the democratic party? >> one wing of the very progressive left. you are just moving it like a very far -- a tad -- i'm not saying anything against senators here on this show, but i think -- >> bernie is a greet graet guy, but it's a tiny little wing. it's probably a little fet zeesh fet other the wing. >> wow. feathers and wicks. we need to take a break. president obama breaks bread with hamid karzai at the white house, but will they break from his withdrawal plans from afghanistan? we will have a live update on the meeting after this. than about engagement with ideas. we haven't talked about another nomination. john brennan and the nomination to be head of the cia has been underreported, and i think what's striking about that is that what was controversial in 2008, and obama had to withdraw him from nomination from the cia. it hasn't been controversial. what does that say about our politics? i want to venture a bold idea which senator daniel patrick moynihan raised in legislation in both 1991 1k3 1995 which this country should think about abolishing the cia. it has a bad track record. we should take a hard look. forget hearings about president's nominees, but we need a new church committee, a new pike committee. people might go check it out. into the abuses of the security state which has grown beyond the bounds of accountability which this democracy demands. >> let's talk about the left and how they are approaching both of these, and i want to focus first on hagel. we are talking about neo conservatives and how they have come out of the wood work -- not even the wood work. they've come out against hagel
of john brennan, who has been, you know, back and forth. the drone program, and we are now finally actually starting to talk about drones and whether or not they help or hinder america's national security interests. what you hear about anecdotally is that when you have the drone strikes, it is often in the radicalizing people on the ground, as much as it is, you know, sort of saving american blood and treasure. it is definitely a double-eejed sword. >> it's a complicated question. on the one hand you have successes, foreign policy successes, that the white house can crow and say we've done and killed our enemies, and they like to be able to do that. on the other hand, yes, they're making enemies. you're making more enemies. it's perhaps, you know, more of the same problem. it's just worsening the problem. >> amman, the morning times writes the hostage situation in algeria has hutenned concerns that a military intervention could transform militant groups that had once only a regional focus into enemies of the u.s. the backlash might end up being worse than the original threat. what
